Collaborating with Kendrick Lamar on the album "To Pimp a Butterfly" and a close colleague of Robert Glasper, singer Bilal is considered a standard-bearer for New York's neo-soul scene. Though he rubs shoulders with the rap and rock worlds, jazz has always had a special place in the singer and composer's life, first in the small local church of his Philadelphia neighbourhood and then at performing arts school. Creating music he describes as a mixture of jazz fusion, rock and funk, he demonstrates a rare degree of musical freedom on all his seven albums.
